UI design challenge

Project Overview - In case you are in a rush ⚡️

With the Pandemic reaching its peak in December 2020, and new solutions coming along such as Clubhouse, I decided to challenge my self and integrate a Netflix Fun Group within the Netflix IOS App. The main idea was to enable users to create and join friends or random groups and enjoy a movie together.

On this project, I challenged myself with the following:
Integrate a completely new feature within an existing product comes with its lot of complexity. By integration, we need to think about multiple problematics:
-  Integrate the new features into the existing architecture of the product seamlessly.
-  It's also imperative that the design integrates within the existing design system.
-  Finally, create an inclusive and intuitive design to ensure consistent end-to-end experience across the platforms

Scope

Integrate a completely new feature within an existing product comes with its lot of complexity. By integration, we need to think about multiple problematics:

-  It's also imperative that the design integrates within the existing design system.
-  Finally, create an inclusive and intuitive design to ensure consistent end-to-end experience across the platforms

Competitive Analysis

For my competitive analysis, I chose to focus on well-known products offering the fun group experience such as Xbox live but also more recently Clubhouse

The main findings include:

Join existing groups: most of these apps allow you to join friends already in a group.

Chat integration: chat integration is of course a must in all these apps. Clubhouse, however, focuses exclusively on the vocal discussion.

Companion app: regarding the gaming app, they are more to be considered as a companion app, out of the game itself.

Integration into a well-established and consistent design system

Main Dashboard

In order to integrate the new feature within the popular Netflix app, it was important early on to analyze which are the key elements of the design system in place and how could we bring the innovative fun group within this system.

In order to do so, I referred to the existing items and alternate their design to integrate the new fun group components, trying to keep a logical and consistent approach UX and UI-wise.

Challenges & takeaways

Designing following an existing Design System

Integrating a new feature within an existing app comes with its own limitations. I wanted to display elements in a certain way, however, I quickly realize that it was not "Netflix friendly" which was frustrating but also a great exercise as in the end most people said that they could not see the difference with the real product.

Prepare for test and iterations

Looking to build the most immersive experience possible, I would like to test the chat feature as a companion app when the movie is cast on TV. Next step will include test on the navigation, group creation and chat interaction.
